Have you heard about rain gardening yet? Rain gardens are shallow depressions filled with native plants that have the ability to sit in or near pooling water but are also comfortable with the soiling then drying out some. Typically these plants naturally grow in floodplains. Rain gardens are situated near impervious surfaces such as driveways or by a downspout collecting rain coming off the roof. The goal is to collect rainwater during large storms and allow it to slowly percolate back into the soil recharging groundwater instead of forcing it into nearby rivers and streams which may overflow.

This kit features three amazing plants that thrive in these conditions.  On top of that worthy characteristic the Amsonia (quart pot) produces showy true blue flowers in spring, the Filipendula (1/2 gallon) produces cotton candy pink blooms in summer and the Lizards Tail (1/2 gallon) has pure white blossoms throughout the summer.

Lobelia siphilitica-Blue lobelia
Exposure: Full Sun - Partial Shade
Water: Medium to wet
Height: 2'-3'
Width: 1'-1.5'
Bloom: July to September
Notes: Clump forming perennial that self sows to form large stands under ideal conditions. Effective when naturalized or used in a rain garden. Great late season bloom.

Filipendula rubra- Queen of the Prairie

Exposure: Full Sun - Part Shade
Water: Medium to Wet
Height: 6' to 8'
Width: 3' to 4'
Bloom: June - August
Notes: Pink Astilbe-like flowers are an utter delight. Generally sturdy and does not need staking despite size. Ideal rain garden plant.

Saururus cernuus-  Lizards Tail

Exposure: Full Sun to Part Shade
Water: Wet
Height: 1' to 2'
Width: 1' to 2'
Bloom: June to September
Notes: Attractive white, showy, fragrant citrus-y blossoms in the shape of a "lizards tail" (but, beautiful, trust us) bloom over a long period. Plant thrives in wet conditions and tolerates some shading. Spreads somewhat aggressively in optimum conditions but is easily managed and looks great when massed in drifts anyhow.
