Notes: Yes indeed, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has a native species of cactus. Primarily found in sandy, coastal locations, this cactus is actually endangered in the state due to habitat loss. All the more reason to heed the warnings at the beach to stay on the boardwalk and out of the fragile dune ecosystem. That said these fellas are tough, carefree, and will thrive in your home landscape producing a bounty of bright yellow blooms. The pads will shrivel up in winter and look a little worse for the wear but a couple rainy days in spring will help them fatten right back up.
